A Quote To Remember

No less than 20 years ago a good friend shared this quote with me at a time when I needed it. I was trying to see into the future, looking for certainty about where some weighty part of my life was headed, which is always a futile attempt, as I have yet to meet anyone who can accurately predict what's coming next. The friend read me this old Rilke quote that has, well, just simply made life a bit easier ever since. For years I too have passed on the following basic yet powerful approach to those of my clients how, like me, would like to move into the future with more certainty:

Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer. ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
