In this segment of his interview with KOMO News, Justin Pere from Clarity Counseling Seattle responds to a timely question: “What can people do if they’re feeling anxiety or depression for the first time—or if their usual coping tools aren’t enough right now?”
This video offers practical, grounding ideas for anyone feeling overwhelmed by stress, sadness, or uncertainty. Even if you’ve never experienced anxiety or depression before, your emotional reactions are valid—and support is available.
Everyday Strategies to Manage Anxiety and Depression
Here are some of the tips Justin shared in the interview, adapted for both newcomers to mental health struggles and those looking for a reset:
- Recognize this is a normal reaction to an abnormal situation. Emotional distress during periods of disruption or uncertainty doesn’t mean something is “wrong” with you—it means you’re human.
- Limit the news cycle. Stay informed, but don't overload yourself. Avoid deep-dives into articles that leave you feeling worse. Check the news once or twice a day, then move on.
- Redefine self-care. Whether it’s stretching, taking a walk, journaling, listening to music, or dancing in your kitchen—find what reconnects you to your body and the present moment.
- Move your body. Exercise, however gentle, can ground you. Movement pulls us out of spiraling thoughts and back into our senses.
- Focus on breath and body awareness. Breathing from your diaphragm and relaxing tight muscles are powerful ways to shift your internal state.
- Try mindfulness tools. Apps like Calm and Headspace offer short, effective meditations. You might also explore “Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction” (MBSR), a proven program for building resilience.
- Read something helpful—or purely enjoyable. Try books like The Mindful Way Through Anxiety, or escape with fiction that gives your brain a break.
- Lean into connection. Reach out to those who make you feel grounded and safe. It’s okay to initiate a check-in or say, “Hey, I could use a voice right now.”
- Consider therapy—whether starting or returning. Our therapists are supporting hundreds of individuals and couples every week through online counseling. We're here if and when you’re ready to talk.
