The Stress Diagram: How Mindfulness Can Shift Your Stress Response

Stress Diagram | Therapist Seattle WA

This visual was shared with me years ago, and I’ve returned to it countless times with clients. It’s a powerful way to understand how mindfulness can change our experience of stress — not by removing the stressors, but by reshaping our response to them.

The left side of the diagram represents what most of us experience without any practice in presence or regulation: reactivity, overwhelm, and tension. It’s a default mode for many, especially when life feels demanding or uncertain.

The right side shows what's possible with time, effort, and support — often through individual therapy or mindfulness-based strategies. When we learn to pause, breathe, and reconnect with our bodies, we gain more choice in how we respond. Stressors still arise, but we don’t have to spiral with them.

Over the years, I’ve seen so many clients make this shift — from automatic reaction to intentional response. That change doesn’t require perfection. Just willingness. And a space to practice something new.

If you’re interested in exploring this kind of work, individual therapy or couples counseling can be a supportive place to begin. At Clarity Counseling Seattle, we offer both in-person and online therapy options to fit your life. Book a consultation to learn more — we’d be honored to connect with you.
